The Building Department is committed to ensuring the safety, resilience, and orderly development of our community through professional building code enforcement, plan review, and permit issuance.
We provide a range of services to residents, contractors, developers, and business owners, including:
Plan Review:
We review building plans and construction documents to ensure compliance with local codes, state regulations, and national building standards. This includes structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Permits:
Permits are required for most construction, renovation, and repair activities. We issue permits for residential and commercial projects and perform inspections at various stages to ensure work meets safety standards.
* All work that requires a permit must be permitted prior to commencement of work, contain an E-911 address and all city, state and other requirements must be met. Any unpermitted work will result in the doubling of permit fees.
- Permit application instructions are available from the Building Department. An email can be sent to inspections [at] alexandercityal.gov (inspections[at]alexandercityal[dot]gov) for PDF guides.
Floodplain Review:
Our team evaluates development proposals within designated flood zones to ensure compliance with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and local floodplain management ordinances. We help minimize flood risk and protect property and public safety.
Inspections:
All inspections must be scheduled through the Building Services Department at (256) 329-6712 or by emailing Inspections [at] alexandercityal.gov (Inspections[at]alexandercityal[dot]gov). A 24-hour notice is required for all inspections. On Wednesdays inspection times will be available from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. There will be no inspections on Wednesday afternoons. This is set-a-side to allow staff time to review plans, assist with questions and other responsibilities.
Before a final inspection can be scheduled
- A completed subcontractors list must be turned into Building Department staff and
- All contractors and subcontractors must hold a current Alexander City business license and applicable building permits for work performed.
