City Attorney
City of Alexander City, Alabama
The City of Alexander City is accepting statements of interest from qualified attorneys interested in serving as City Attorney.
The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council and serves as legal counsel to the Council, Mayor, and City departments. This is a professional services appointment and is not a staff position.
General Responsibilities
The City Attorney may be expected to provide legal services including, but not limited to:
- Attend City Council meetings, work sessions, and other meetings as requested.
- Provide legal advice regarding municipal governance and City operations.
- Draft and review ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements, deeds, easements, legal correspondence, policies, and other legal documents.
- Advise the City on compliance with Alabama municipal law, ethics law, the Open Meetings Act, and Public Records laws.
- Represent the City in administrative proceedings, claims, and litigation matters.
- Provide legal guidance on personnel matters and other employment-related issues.
- Coordinate with outside counsel and insurance carriers when appropriate.
- Provide general legal counsel to the Mayor, City Council, and department leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
- Licensed to practice law in Alabama and in good standing with the Alabama State Bar.
- Experience in municipal law, representing public entities, or ten (10) years of relevant practice.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to provide timely legal guidance.
- Available to attend City Council and respond to legal matters as needed.
- Ability to identify and avoid actual or potential conflicts of interest

Submissions will be reviewed administratively for completeness and provided to the City Council for consideration. The City may request additional information from applicants, including proposed compensation or fee arrangements, prior to making an appointment.
